Neighborhood Revitalization

The Challenge

The revitalization of Cultural and Commercial Corridor on Centre Avenue in the Hill District has been in the works for decades. In 2019, the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh released an RFQ that invited local developers to propose new infill development projects on 140 parcels of available vacant and dilapidated property.  

Studio Volcy proposed a 3-Phase Mixed-Use Development, RHYTHM Square which is comprised of 12 parcels and 2 existing buildings.

The Vision

RHYTHM SQUARE is a mixed-use development in the heart of the Hill’s Cultural District. The project will include approximately 16,00 square feet of commercial space including gallery exhibition space, micro-restaurants, maker studios, live-work space and affordable housing units. Site features include a collection of permanent and temporary murals, an outdoor courtyard as well as off street vehicle and bicycle parking that will be made available to residents and commercial tenants.

The existing Lumber Supply Warehouse, on the southeast-side of the site, will be an adaptive reuse project featuring maker studios, 1 retail shop and a small storefront space that will be the new creative studio location for Studio Volcy. The existing Home Improvement Warehouse located on the Southwest portion of the site will be renovated into a commercial space workspace. The office will feature work spaces and collaboration spaces for staff members and a gallery space that will be open for evening and weekend events. The residential units on the upper levels will be 1 and 2 bedroom loft-style affordable residences.

We believe that RHYTHM Square will bring the cultural vibrancy and employment opportunities to the Hill District as outlined in the Greater Hill District Masterplan. This combination of food, culture, work and entertainment is designed to attract pittsburgh residents and tourists to Centre Avenue.

We are committed to help preserve and illuminate the Hill District’s Cutltural Legacy and the development of RHYTHM Square is just the beginning.
